ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN: HAVE YOU SEEN HER?

Who is she? Have you seen her? Do you know her? She is an Artist from Chicago, using the media against it's self. Instead, she is using the media and her self-created logo and promotional campaign to market herself as an Artist to make it in these economic times.

Extra News - Chicago through a Different Set
of Eyes

Carolina Reyes knows the city of Chicago well. She was not only born here, but as an artist, she sees the city through a different set of eyes. Reyes’ new exhibit, “Made in Chicago,” focuses on a side of Chicago that is not usually printed on tourist’s guides.

For Reyes, the love for art began in high school, and continued throughout college. Now, Reyes is not only an assistant at La Llorona Gallery, but also an artist whose focus is urban pop with a spark of surrealism.

Recently, Reyes gave a tour of Chicago in which she admits she saw the city in a new light.
“Having to explain the architecture made me appreciate the city even more,” Reyes said.
Reyes found inspiration for her new exhibit over a course of two years.

“During that time, I rode my bike all around the city and I saw a lot. I learned that certain things are unjust and that’s what I wanted to focus on.”

Reyes adds that there are many things about Chicago that are underrepresented – such as gentrification – and uses this as an opportunity to show the audience some of the bigger issues that concern Chicago.

Although her exhibit has kept her busy, she still finds time to visit the local art scene.
“There’s a lot of men in the art world so I do my best to go around and show my support for female artists as well,” she says.

Her advice for up-and-coming artists: “Don’t give up what you’re doing. You’re going to receive criticism all the time, but the idea is to stick with what is important to you.”

After viewing her art, Reyes wants the audience to leave with the idea that it’s O.K. to question things.

“We’re taught not to question, we just follow rules, so I want them to stop for a moment and think. Questioning things brings awareness and that in itself can bring change,” she said.

Stylized Nudes Expected to Top Latin American Art Sales at Christie's and Sotheby's (One of my many favorite Artists)

NEW YORK, NY (REUTERS).- A bronze of a voluptuous nude holding a cigarette and a volcanic landscape strewn with lifeless limbs top this week's Latin American art auctions. The New York sales at Christie's and Sotheby's follow strong auctions this month for Modern and Impressionist art, stirring hopes of a rebound in the Latin American art market after weak sales in the spring. "The psychology of the market is different now ... than when there was collapse of the financial markets," said Christie's Latin American expert Virgilio Garza, referring to the slump in the stock market. "People were careful then with spending, now there is more confidence." "Endless Nudes," painted by Chile's Matta, could fetch up to $3 million, according to Sotheby's. ... More

Date Farmers, Tell Them Willy Boy Was Here, Courtesy New Image Art Gallery

New Image Art stages an imaginative collection of works by the Date Farmers (aka Coachella Valley's Carlos Ramirez and Armando Lerma). The duo's output is comprised of scavenged materials alongside traditional media, recalling Mexican folk art, prison art, and Native American portraiture. The works present thematic narratives on the indigenous California experience, employing pop-culture and religious influences to identify what it means to be a native southlander. The gallery's project room narrows the scope of the pair's works with Cat House, examining one of their most prized subjects, the feline.

Light Is the New Graffiti

http://popupcity.net/2009/08/light-is-the-new-graffiti/

As you may have noticed, we like to explore the boundaries of contemporary street art. In the past we wrote about topics such as confetti graffiti, fluorescent tape art and projections that address the issue of street safety at night. This one is another example illustrating the expanding scope of the street art scene. All you need is a camera with good Long Exposure option, a light and, most important, a healthy dose of inspiration.

Artists like Jaron Korvinus already experimented with this form of ‘10 seconds street art’, loose from wall or stoop. Check out the ‘Lightdrawing’ project on his website. You can find many, many more pictures about light graffiti on Flickr. Some of the creations are outstanding and actually play with the urban environment.
